Off Shore Navigation - Level 1

Suggested prerequisite:  Near Shore Navigation – Level 2

Making a crossing between continents on a recreational sailboat is a whole new undertaking as compared to cruising within sight of land. 

This course includes learning how to take observations of the sun with a traditional sextant in daylight conditions.  Other topics include sea time, celestial LOP, meridian transit, route planning, GPS, navigation electronics, winds and currents, underway.

Modern electronic applications are introduced incuding Open Chart Plotter Navigation ‘OpenCPN’ and Visual Pasaage Planner ‘VPP2’.
