Suggested Prerequisite: Basic Navigation and Boat Handling, formerly known as Boating 2 & 3
Description: This is an eleven evening website-based (Moodle) course, which is a combination of self study and weekly lecture, question and answer, and experience-sharing between students and instructor. Near Shore Marine Navigation - Level 1, formerly known as Seamanship and Boating 4 is highly recommended for those mariners who are into cruising beyond their local harbour and coastline. All study materials are posted on line and are available for download, saving, and printing. Students "come to class" having already read the on-line chapter(s) and reviewed other resources. Classes will start with a review of last week's activities, followed by Q and A, and the session will progress with short lectures and demonstrations. At the start of the course, students will be mailed a package of study materials, including the hardcopy text book. The two-part final exam consists of a cruise and a written exam, both of which will be in "take-home" format.

Instructor David Hill was a senior officer in the Royal Canadian Navy for 20 years, serving as a navigator and watchkeeper in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Dave then went to the Naval Reserves as a training officer and Executive Officer at naval shore establishments. Dave holds numerous licenses in recreational boating, including Bareboat Skipper (80 ft), Certificate of Competency (Power, 24 meters), Rib Master, and Communications Master.
